THE MARCHE

The farm is located in the countryside of the ancient marca of Fermo.

To the EAST lies the Adriatic, the location of Venetian trade, overlooked by cities of palm trees and Mediterranean vegetation. PORTO SAN GIORGIO, with its well-frequented tourist marina, the Tiepolo fortress and walls, evidence of the close links between Fermo and the Republic of Venice, the beautiful tree-lined avenues of pine and Art Nouveau villas of the tourist elite of the early twentieth century.
TORRE DI PALME is an ancient shrine with its exquisite medieval churches. It appears like the prow of a ship pointing towards the sea.
Beyond the mouth of the Aso lies CUPRA, overlooked by the ancient MARANO, GROTTAMMARE with its long beach of soft sand and the nice old village; then the modern coast of SAN BENEDETTO with its endless palm-lined promenade full of life. The coast is full of sandy beaches caressed by a warm sea with shallow waters. The many well organized beach resorts provide fun, rest and relaxation and the local seafood cuisine. Not far away lies the northbound Conero promontory, a national park with white cliffs and many bays of turquoise sea.

To the WEST, the Monti Sibillini National Park can be easily reached. The highest peak, the VETTORE dominates the karst plains of Castelluccio with wonderful summer flowers and encloses the legendary Lake Pilato, the banks red because of the presence of the chirocefalo of Marchesoni. The SIBILLA is a place of legend and stories of men with "commonalities" who administered and cultivated the slopes of the mountain. Then the gorge of the INFERNACCIO, like a Dantesque circle, through which the river Tenna made an opening and the valley of Ambro with an abundance of water and a beautiful sanctuary dedicated to Our Lady.

To the SOUTH lies the bountiful valley of the Aso. MEDIEVAL TOWNS form the unmistakable sky-line, defended by walls, gathered around small squares dominated by the ridges. ALTIDONA, an outpost overlooking the blue Adriatic; MORESCO, with the soaring tower; MONTERUBBIANO, with Baroque churches and the memory of the coming of the ancient Picenes in the evocation of "scio 'la Pica". On the other side of the valley, MONTEFIORE, with its beautiful and engaging flower festival on the occasion of Corpus Christi; MONTALTO, country of Sixtus V with the imposing cathedral, the old town and the views towards the slopes furrowed by ravines.
In the interior lie MONTEFALCONE and SMERILLO, with 360 degree views of the valley and the Apennine spurs rising on sedimentary rocks.
And then comes COMUNANZA, overseeing the valley and the connecting roads between the mountains and the plains. Finally, MONTEMONACO with its high walls and stone houses facing the Sibillini Mountains and nearby MONTEFORTINO, with houses and buildings well laid along the contour lines.

To the NORTH, is the valley of the Tenna where the life of ancient villages such as SANT'ELPIDIO A MARE, have been intertwined with the shoe industry since the Second World War, constituting the so-called triangle of the shoe. Here is an opportunity for shopping lovers as there are so many outlets in the area. Continuing up the valley, near the modern PIANE DI FALERONE, is the well-preserved Roman theatre witness to the long history of the area. Further on SERVIGLIANO, with a geometric square plan designed and intended for civilian use, an example of a planned settlement. At the end of the valley lies the town of AMANDOLA on the pre-Apennine way to Macerata and Ascoli Piceno (near the beautiful SARNANO and the Roman URBS SALVIA).

FERMO, the "firmum, firma fides romanorum colonia" on a hill overlooking the whole territory, is easily recognizable from a distance; witnesses to its historical importance are the elegant square, the white dome, the beautiful churches, the well-stocked ancient library, the stately mansions along the main street, the well-preserved Roman baths and the annual commemoration of the Cavalcade of the Assumption.

Not far away, the astonishing ASCOLI PICENO is a city of living stone and squares, the urban fabric preserving the signs of a long, interesting history. La Quintana, the jousting ring, is a reminder of medieval splendour.
